A Summary of the event that was posted in the Rockdale Citizen, May 19, 2019.
A HEARTFELT THANKS — I’d like to express my gratitude to the people whose tireless efforts made possible our program Saturday, “A Symposium: Embracing the History Around Us” and the rollout of our new Black Heritage Hall of Fame. These folks, in alphabetical order, went beyond the call of duty: Bryson Joyce, Paulette Hill McDermott, Sierra Sawyer, Norma Shipp, Shelli Baker Siebert, and Katrina McCollum Young. Thank you to members of the developing Community Advisory Council who pitched in to help greet and accommodate everyone: Beth Rogers Andersen and Tommy Morgan (assisted by his wife Donna). Thank you to our incredible musicians, Noah Drake, Rylan Andre Harris and Teresa Hamm-Smith. A very special thank you to the young men of the Hills Academy, who were at the ready to help in any way needed. Thanks to all the photographers, including Michelle Kim and Dexter Bowman. We thank the presenters, Johnny Waits and Catherine Long, who shared information about projects that are interesting in at least two ways. First: They offer a fuller narrative about black life in this part of Georgia — specifically the Flat Rock community in DeKalb County and The Promised Land in Gwinnett County. Second: Some of us, even some of us who don't know it yet, have family ties to these sites. Thanks to everyone who attended. We hope to see you at future events.
